Description
Lead change. Shape lives. Be part of something new.
Newham is a borough of rich cultural diversity, transformative growth and real momentum. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made, and clear-eyed about the work still to do to ensure every resident feels safe and supported. This is your opportunity to lead the next chapter.
As our Director of Community Safety & Integrated Enforcement, you’ll bring partners and communities together to deliver visible, sustained improvements in safety, reassurance and quality of life across our neighbourhoods. Your portfolio spans community safety, counterterrorism and extremism, emergency planning, CCTV and ASB; plus a broad set of regulatory services including licensing, trading standards, food safety and commercial health & safety. You’ll also lead our Newham Integrated Community Enforcement (NICE) model—maximising intelligence-led prevention and proportionate partnership enforcement that protects people and places.
It’s an exciting moment in Newham. The service has strong foundations and is ready to push on. You’ll focus on service improvement and impact—co-producing solutions with residents, strengthening partnership working with the police, VRU and MOPAC, and ensuring our emergency planning and business continuity arrangements remain robust and well-tested. You’ll champion women’s safety, tackle serious violence and hate crime, and make sure our approach to ASB is joined up across Environment, Housing, Children’s and Adults’ services.
About you
You’ll be a strategic leader and natural collaborator, equally comfortable in the community and the committee room. You’ll bring credibility on risk-based regulation and public safety at scale, with sound judgement under pressure, including emergency command (e.g. Silver and/or Gold), and a track record of multi-agency delivery that measurably improves outcomes.
You’ll have experience of building high-performing teams, managing significant budgets, and embedding an outcomes- and evidence-led culture within your services, using performance frameworks and resident insight to drive continuous improvement. You’ll also be skilled in influencing at regional and national level, resilient under scrutiny, and committed to fairness, inclusion and co-production with communities.
If you share our belief that safety and fairness go hand in hand—and you’re ready to lead with purpose in one of London’s most dynamic and diverse boroughs, we’d love to hear from you.
